Shoes For Crews was founded in 1984 by Stanley Smith, who together with Matt Smith were producing a small collection of footwear for nurses out of their family apartment. One of their contacts mentioned a need for shoes to "grip" the slippery floors of a restaurant. The Smith family took this idea and ran with it by partnering with a professor of rubber technology to create the first line of slip-resistant footwear.
